Ahead of his formal declaration of intent to contest the Ilorin South state Constituency seat at the Kwara State House of Assembly, a former Special Assistant on Media to the Kwara Assembly Speaker and Editor of Fresh Insight TV, an investigative journalism outlet in Kwara, Comrade Ibrahim Sheriff popularly known as Comrade ‘Gold’ has engaged in series of consultations among stakeholders of the Social Democratic Party in Ilorin South.
According to reports, The last one week has seen the former Unionist consulting with the eleven ward Chairmen and women leaders of the SDP in Ilorin South local government, stating reasons why he has decided to aspire to represent the good people of Ilorin South at the State Assembly.
In his remarks at the separate meetings with the party’s ward Chairmen and women leaders, Ibrahim said “As someone who developed political leadership skills from activism, I am convinced that an effective legislature should be an independent and uncompromising advocate of the people that should echo their popular voice.”
“It is however unfortunate that the architect of our democracy has not demonstrated enough courage, creativity and confidence to champion an effective legislation that puts the executives to real-time check in the interest of the people”, he added.
He noted that “to ensure true progress, our democracy must work effectively. We must have a legislative institution where elected members realize they are independently responsible for their actions and inactions to their constituents and not an extension of another arm of government, regardless of the political ties.”
“It is my desire to contest the House of Assembly seat so that we can stop preaching the democratic idealism we have been known for, but act it and demonstrate that what we have been professing is not impracticable”, he concluded.
Reacting to the development, the Ward Chairmen appreciated Comr. Ibrahim Sheriff (Gold) for always summoning the courage to stand by the truth, describing his plan to contest the Ilorin South House of Assembly as a welcome development which goes down well with the Forum of Party Chairmen within the local government area.
They also assured that the Chairmen will avail Ibrahim of necessary support and pray Allah makes his intentions for Ilorin South state Constituency a reality.
The women leaders who took turns to talk also applaud Ibrahim’s decision to contest Ilorin South State Assembly seat, noting that he is the first to convene a meeting of all SDP women leaders in the local government.
